New research suggests that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals buying such medications must be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team point out that people who shed pounds through dieting usually see a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts stress that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
